Archaeological survey starts 4th Jan

There will be people on the proposed site of the village hall and its associated housing from 4th January 2012. They will be digging trenches to carry out the archaeological survey required by the planning office as part of the planning application.
The Planning Archaeologist at County Hall said:
Cropmarks of linear ditches and possible enclosures have previously been recorded at the proposed development site. The alignment of these features does not conform to the post-medieval field pattern and it is likely that they relate to several difference phases of activity spanning the prehistoric to medieval periods. These cropmarks indicate that there are known heritage assets with archaeological interest (buried archaeological remains) at the site but it is likely that there will be further, as yet unidentified, heritage assets present and that the significance of all of these may be affected by the proposed development.
In view of this we request that a heritage statement, including the results of a programme of archaeological evaluation, is submitted with the planning application (in accordance with Planning Policy Statement 5: Planning for the Historic Environment (2010) policy HE6.1. Norfolk County Council Historic Environment Service will provide a brief for the archaeological work on request.
I note from the plans that you have sent through the recently completed Hubbards Loke development to the south of the proposed development site. In anticipation of the question as to why no archaeological work was required at that site I have checked back through the records. In short, the mapped cropmark evidence constitutes new information which has become available since the adjacent application was considered.

The survey has finished and the land flattened again and should be safe but as always, take care. I noticed a few rabbit holes today. The survey didn’t uncover anything of archaeological interest so it won’t delay the planning process at all.
